April 28
National Day of Mourning

National Day of Mourning is the day to remember workers that have been killed or injured in the workplace or died from an occupational disease related to workplace exposure. The labour movement picked April 28 to recognize these ongoing tragedies as the first Worker's Compensation Act in Ontario was approved by the government on April 28, 1914. The federal government acknowledged this day in 1991 by passing an act respecting April 28th as the Day of Mourning for Persons killed or injured in the workplace.

The one comment we hear time and again is how lonely someone who is unable to work as a result of illness or injury. You may be feeling this way because of a sense of being "cut off" from co-workers, friends and even some family members. It may be because you can't be as active as you "used to be" or it may be because some people just don't know what to do or say to help you at this time.

Find comfort in initiatives such as Injured Worker Day. Families just like yours have an opportunity to have a voice and share stories that may bring the awareness to others that there is life...post injury.
