Facts about the C.P.P.
1. In order to be eligible for CPP disability benefits you had to have worked and contributed (C.P.P. deductions off your pay) in 6 out of the last 10 years or 4 out of the last 6.
2. You must be deemed totally disabled in order to receive this benefit. The disability must be both "severe" and "prolonged" and must keep you from doing any type of work.
3. The maximum benefit you can receive from C.P.P. disability as of January 1, 2000 is $913.00/month. This is based on the amount of contributions you have made towards the plan and the number of years you contributed. The minimum is close to $500.00/month.
4. If you are deemed disabled and you have children under the age of 25 who are still enrolled in full-time schooling you will also receive an additional $180.00/month per child.
5. The maximum retroactive benefits you can receive is as far back as 15 months prior to the date of your application.
6. Once you stop working due to your disability, you should apply for C.P.P. disability as soon as possible. The reason for this is that your minimum qualifying period (MQP) may expire and you will not be entitled to benefits no matter how disabled you are.
7. If your spouse passes away and he or she was receiving the CPP disability benefit, you are entitled to a survivor benefit.
