Canada Pension Plan: Survivor's Pension

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) Survivor's Pension provides a monthly pension to the surviving spouse, common-law partner or children of a deceased contributor.

Canada Pension Plan: Death Benefit

The Death Benefit provides a one-time payment to, or on behalf of, the estate of a deceased contributor. Where there is no will or estate, it may be payable to the person(s) responsible for funeral costs, the survivor or the next of kin in that order.

Monthly Survivor's Benefit

Available to the eligible spouse or common-law partner even if the survivor remarries.

Benefits for Children

The Canada Pension Plan (CPP) provides a monthly benefit to the dependent children of disabled or deceased contributors. Monthly benefit for children under age 18 or between 18 and 25 and in full-time attendance at a recognized institution.

Allowance for the Survivor

This program provides a monthly non-taxable benefit to low-income widows who are not yet eligible for the Old Age Security pension.

Compassionate Care Benefits

Employment Insurance (EI) provides Compassionate Care Benefits to persons who have to be away from work temporarily to provide care or support to a family member who is gravely ill with a significant risk of death. Current application processing time: 28 days

Regarding Members of the Canadian Armed Forces

The Canadian Government has traditionally assumed responsibility for the burial of members of the Canadian Armed Forces who died during battle and, later, those who died as a result of war-related injuries. In the years following the end of the Second World War and the Korean War, benefits were expanded to Veterans who died without the financial means to provide for a dignified funeral and burial.

When a veteran receiving the disability pension dies, his or her survivor continues to receive this benefit for one year, after which a survivor's pension is automatically paid.
